OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma House has approved legislation that authorizes persons with concealed handgun licenses to store their handgun in a locked vehicle on school parking lots.

The House voted 83-6 for the measure Thursday and sent it to the Senate for consideration.

Currently, handguns are prohibited inside public and private schools as well as school parking lots. The measure by Rep. Steve Martin of Bartlesville allows a person with a concealed handgun permit to leave the weapon in a locked vehicle in school parking lots provided the handgun is hidden from view when left unattended. Handguns would still be prohibited from schools.

The measure also reduces violations of the handgun regulations from a felony to a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $250.
