House OKs immunity measure

The House passed a bill that would provide immunity for anyone calling authorities for assistance with an intoxicated person. Senate Bill 1 states a law officer may not take a person into custody for public intoxication if the person requested emergency medical help for another person who appears to be in need of medical help because of alcohol consumption. The person seeking help would have to name the intoxicated person and give relevant information and cooperate with emergency medical personnel. Speaker Pro Tem Mike Jackson, R-Enid, said some are hesitant to seek help when friends are intoxicated because they fear they may be arrested. The House voted 85-5 for SB 1. It now goes back to the Senate.
