The Education and Employment Ministry announced Thursday that Steele would become the organization's executive director on Nov. 26.
Steele is a Republican from Shawnee who has served in the Oklahoma House of Representatives since 2000 and the last two years as speaker. He was prevented from seeking another term in office because of term limits.
Steele also has been serving as associate pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church in Shawnee.
The organization's current executive director Rev. Tony Zahn praised Steele's “vision and vitality” and says he plans to stay on with the organization as its executive director emeritus.
