McALESTER — An inmate at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary has been charged in the alleged assault on a prison guard.

A local newspaper reports that 34-year-old Ronnie Ray Shelton was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and possession of contraband by an inmate.

Prosecutors accuse Shelton of assaulting a guard with a homemade knife in October 2011.

Authorities at the prison say the guard was injured but has since returned to work.

Shelton is now serving a 10-year sentence for a 1998 robbery conviction in Bryant County. If convicted of the new charges, he faces up to life in prison.
