Oklahoma journalism students are honored

Winners of the Newsroom 101 scholarships and awards were announced Monday. Newsroom 101 is a free program organized and sponsored by The Oklahoman for high school journalism students.

Journalism students honored

Several students were recognized Tuesday night for outstanding work in Newsroom 101, a free program organized and sponsored by The Oklahoman for high school journalism students.

Sequoyah Moore, who attends Edmond Santa Fe High School, and Luke Swanson, who attends Yukon High School, won the Ann DeFrange Outstanding Student Journalist Award. Moore, a senior, also won a $1,000 scholarship.

Tim Locke, who attends Oklahoma Christian Academy, won the Don Gammill Outstanding Leadership Award. Jerry Holland, who attends Davenport High School, won the Gerry Baker Outstanding Dedication Award. Hannah Robinson, who attends Southmoore High School, won the Hot Ink Outstanding Underclassman Award.

Lauren Dennison, with OKC Beautiful, received the Community Support Award for her assistance with the program.

The Oklahoman awarded $250 grants to two schools — Mercy School Institute and Santa Fe South High School — for their journalism programs.

In addition to the award winners, Newsroom 101 participants this year were: Sarah Helsley, Edmond Santa Fe High School; Ashley Mandanas, Heritage Hall; Charles Metcalf, Deer Creek High School; Austin Moore, Santa Fe South; Carson Williams, Putnam City North High School; Sydney Henderson and Callie Struby, Harding Charter Prep; and Areebah Anwar, Hiba Cheema, Isra Cheema, Zoha Qureshi, Nida Safdar and Uzma Sandhu, Mercy School Institute.
