Oklahoma lake visitors are urged to beware of blue-green algae, low water levels
In light of low water levels and the rise of blue-green algae, officials are urging visitors to Oklahoma lakes to use caution this Labor Day weekend.
People heading to state lakes for the Labor Day weekend are urged to check the water for blue-green algae before jumping in.
“If it's green on top, stop!” said Nate Herring, spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Oklahoma lakes are tested for blue-green algae routinely by the corps, he said. Results from algae testing are posted at www.checkmyoklake.com.
On Thursday, the website reported elevated blue-green algae cell counts at Keystone Lake, Lake Texoma and Lake Tenkiller, among others. At Copan Lake, a blue-green algae alert was issued, with water contact prohibited at the lake's Post Oak Campground area.
The site also gives fishing reports and lake levels.
Herring said the ongoing drought in Oklahoma has lowered lake levels.
The most recent posting for Canton Lake showed the water is 8 feet lower than normal.
Boaters should watch for obstacles that are now exposed by low lake levels, such as rocks or tree stumps, Herring said.
