MULDROW — Authorities in eastern Oklahoma say a landowner shot and killed a man who was allegedly stealing copper from his property.

Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart says the shooting happened Tuesday night north of Muldrow. Lockhart tells a local television station that two men were trying to steal copper and other items from an abandoned house.

Lockhart says the landowner confronted the pair as they were sitting in a pickup truck. He says a passenger got out of the truck but the driver accelerated toward the landowner.

The sheriff says the landowner then fired his shotgun into the truck's windshield. The driver took off but was found about a quarter-mile away, dead from gunshot wounds.

The sheriff says prosecutors will determine whether any charges should be filed.
