A Republican House member is looking into the possibility of privatizing Oklahoma's child welfare services.

State Rep. Ron Peters conducted an interim study on the issue Tuesday before the House Appropriations and Budget Subcommittee on Human Services. The Tulsa Republican chairs the committee.

Peters says he's looking at efforts in Kansas and Florida to privatize all child welfare case management services. He says 13 states have privatized some portion of their child welfare system.

Peters acknowledged such a move in Oklahoma would be a "massive and complicated undertaking."

Legislative committees frequently hold such interim studies to examine an issue that may be addressed with a bill when lawmakers return to the state Capitol in February.
