LAWTON — An Oklahoma man has been sentenced to life in prison for the shooting death of his girlfriend's 54-year-old mother.
A local newspaper reports that 30-year-old Warren McGuffey pleaded guilty Wednesday to first-degree murder and an assault charge.
Comanche County District Court Judge Gerald Neuwirth ordered McGuffey to spend his life in prison, with the possibility of parole, for the murder charge. The judge sentenced him to 10 more years, with five years suspended, on the assault charge.
McGuffey was arrested for the fatal shooting of Darlene Binns in January 2012.
McGuffey's lawyer, Don Gutteridge, said his client had been adamant about having a jury hear his case, but Gutteridge said McGuffey changed his mind after seeing Binns' family and friends in court.
