Oklahoma men's basketball: Sooners crush TCU, lose starter Buddy Hield to broken foot

Buddy Hield, the energetic freshman guard, was likely lost for the rest of the regular season with a fracture in his foot.

The injury is to Hield's fifth metatarsal, also known as the outside bone in his right foot. He is expected to be out four to six weeks. An OU release said Hield is scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday.

“It's not good,” Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger said. “We'll discuss the options tomorrow or later tonight. It'll be a while before Buddy gets back.”

On a night when the Sooners (16-7 overall, 7-4 Big 12) took care of business like an NCAA Tournament team, holding the Horned Frogs (10-14, 1-10) to just 11 first half points and outscoring them in every category but 3-pointers made, the biggest moment of the game came with 7:34 remaining. That's when Hield limped to the bench.

The Sooner guard had just made two free throws. He finished with eight points, two assists and two steals.

Neither Kruger nor any of OU's players knew exactly what happened. Hield did break to the right side of the hoop and was guarding his defender off the inbounds pass. OU broadcaster Toby Rowland said that Hield stepped on the top of his defender's foot and looked like he rolled his ankle.
