A prayer initiative that started during Oklahoma's centennial year has continued for an organization of praying moms.

Kendra Rock, state leader of Moms in Prayer International, said the nonprofit organization's monthlong prayer and fasting effort that began in 2007 was such a success that women across Oklahoma wanted it to become an annual event.

Rock, the mom of two grown sons, said women participating in Moms in Prayer groups prayed and fasted from Oct. 16 to Friday, Statehood Day.

She said the initiative is always a twofold effort.

It encourages participating moms to share information about Moms in Prayer with other mothers, and it also helps the praying moms focus on the Scripture chosen for the effort. Rock said this year's theme was Ephesians 3:20-21, “Now to Him Who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen.”

Rock said moms all across the state meet to pray together weekly in groups that generally tie in to their children's school. For instance, Rock said she first became a member of a prayer group of mothers whose children attended the same elementary school as her boys. The groups meet in participants' homes and, sometimes, churches.
