Back-to-school starts early
Back-to-school shopping started earlier this year, as consumers try to spread out the expense of supplies for K-12 students and necessities for college students. More than half (52 percent) of consumers had wrapped up their shopping as of mid-August, up from 40 percent last year, according to the National Retail Federation. Shoppers are also taking advantage of retailers' sales, coupons and promotions. “Given the historic level of early-bird shoppers we've seen this year, it is evident that many families still consider price and value when looking for their back-to-school and college needs,” said Matthew Shay, president and chief executive of the federation. “Shopping early and often has become a sign of the times as budget-conscious consumers aim to ease the brunt of large spending events.”
