Focus falls on violence
October is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness month and authorities say they hope to spotlight a problem for many households in Oklahoma. Law enforcement officers responded to 24,241 reports of domestic violence in Oklahoma in 2011, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. The number averages to one report of domestic abuse every 21.6 minutes in the state. The agency reported 47 murders were related to domestic abuse in 2011. The number decreased from 51 in the previous year.
The Oklahoma City Zoo is seeking zoo volunteers. People ages 18 and older can apply for volunteer positions in a number of areas. Those who are interested can attend a volunteer recruitment meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Rosser Conservation Education Center at the east end of the zoo's parking lot.
