Time is running out to nominate a deserving candidate for the Dr. R. Murali Krishna Family “Eliminate the Stigma” award.

The award recognizes those who do not work professionally in the mental health field but give “time, support (and) compassion” to those affected by brain disorders, Gail Israel, development coordinator, said in an email.

Nominees may be individuals or organizations. Generally, a single winner is chosen and awarded the $1,000 prize, Israel said; it is possible that an individual and a group will be named winners, and the cash prize will be split between them.

The award, now in its third year, takes its name from Krishna, the president, chief operating officer and medical director of Integris Mental Health. He is also the president and co-founder of the James L. Hall Jr. Center for Mind, Body and Spirit.

The goal is to eliminate the stigma attached to mental illness, which afflicts about 60 million Americans, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Nominations will be accepted until Monday, although Israel said there is a chance the deadline will be extended.
