A new $50,000 machine was custom-modified so it can be operated safely by NewView employees, who are blind or vision-impaired.

NewView, which was formerly was known as the Oklahoma League for the Blind, manufactures about 200,000 shower curtains each year for government agencies.

The new machines will increase production by 20 percent, said Lauren White, president and CEO of the nonprofit company.

The equipment was bought through grant money from the National Industries for the Blind.

"The machine is easier to operate, and I have more people willing to operate it," said David Skelly, a NewView supervisor who is legally blind.

The machine also runs more quietly, and that makes workers more comfortable, he said.

NewView was founded in 1949 and provides competitive-wage jobs and rehabilitation services for people who are blind or visually impaired.

"Our mission is to empower people who are blind to achieve their maximum level of independence," White said.

Skelly has worked for NewView for eight years.

"It feels good to come to work," he said.

NewView has other government contracts, including the making of wheel chocks, fire hoses and switchboard operations.
