Oklahoma panel OKs weapons in some private schools

Published: April 1, 2013

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — An Oklahoma Senate committee has approved a proposal that would let the state's private schools choose whether to allow concealed firearms on their grounds.

The Education Committee passed the proposal without opposition Monday, sending it to the full Senate for consideration. Sen. Sally Kern of Oklahoma City first introduced it in the House, where it was approved in February.

The bill would let people licensed to carry concealed or unconcealed guns take their weapons onto private school grounds if the school allows it. It also protects private schools from legal liability from that decision.

Committee chairman Sen. John Ford declined to hear a separate bill to allow public school teachers to carry weapons if they go through training and their district allows it — which likely kills that bill.
