A police officer was wounded and a man was killed in a shoot-out Friday afternoon in northwest Oklahoma City, authorities said.

The officer was treated and released at a hospital for non-life threatening wounds, police Capt. Dexter Nelson said. After being hit, the officer returned fire and killed his attacker, Nelson said.

Police have not released the names of those involved.

Two police officers attempted to interview a man about 12:20 p.m. Friday at 7-Eleven, 1100 NW 108, Nelson said. The man ran across the street to Western Food Mart, 10900 N Western Ave.

The officers pursued the man and one followed him behind a building at 10908 N Western Ave. Investigators say the man pulled out a firearm and shot the officer. While the officer was going down, he shot the man and killed him, Nelson said.

Homicide and internal affairs detectives are investigating the incident. They are interviewing witnesses and looking for other possible witnesses, he said.

“We're still in the early investigation stages. We do not know what the voluntary contact was about,” Nelson said.
