Church hosts author

— Oklahoma native and author Rilla Askew will be guest speaker at 10 a.m. Sunday at The United Church of Norman-UCC, 1017 Elm Ave. Her presentation, titled “The Cost,” will address racial disparities in America's criminal justice system, America's so-called “school-to-prison pipeline,” and the effect these conditions have on families. Audience discussion will follow her presentation. Askew is the author of four novels and a book of stories. Her latest novel is “Kind of Kin.” A reception for Askew will be at 9:30 a.m. For more information, go to

Labyrinth walk is offered

— The First United Methodist Church of Edmond will offer a labyrinth walk from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at 305 E Hurd. Labyrinth walks are the third Monday of each month in the church's Christian Activities Center, just north of the main church building. The walks are free and open to the public. Neustadt Lectures to focus

on Jewish experience

A biblical history expert will give three presentations Thursday as part of Oklahoma City University's annual Neustadt Lectures. Alan Levenson, a Jewish intellectual history professor at the University of Oklahoma, will deliver the lectures under the theme “Joseph in Scripture and Tradition: Writing Biblical Biography.” The free lectures will be in OCU's Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel on NW 23 near Blackwelder. The first lecture, “Joseph in Biblical Context,” will be at 1 p.m. “Joseph and His Brothers: Thomas Mann's Bible” will be at 3 p.m., and “Joseph's Women” will be at 7 p.m. For more information, call 208-5020 or go to

‘Guideposts' editor to sign books

Rick Hamlin, executive editor of Guideposts magazine, will sign copies of “10 Prayers You Can't Live Without: How to Talk to God About Anything” on Thursday at Barnes and Noble, 6100 N May.

He will give a short presentation at 6:30 p.m. and sign copies of his book at 7 p.m. In “10 Prayers You Can't Live Without” (Guideposts Books, $14.99), Hamlin gives 10 practical ways of praying to God.
