The Supporting Kids in Independent Living program assists high school students who live on their own. The program, which serves about 40 students at any given time, helps them with needs from emergency car repairs to health care and clothing. Its staff serves as mentors and helps students find a job and a place to live.

Since opening about 10 years ago, the program has served more than 800 students.

The program is open to homeless high school students from the Millwood, Oklahoma City, Putnam City and Western Heights school districts.

Despite all the assistance it has provided, the program itself is in need, officials said.

Director Maureen Kelley, said her organization is seeking donations to help keep the program afloat.

SKIL is funded through United Way, Oklahoma City School District and private donations.

Kelley said any donations made would go toward helping meet the needs of the city’s homeless students.

People can also help by volunteering at the center or donating nonperishable food items or new adult-size white polo shirts so students can have school uniforms.

A list of needed items can be found at the SKIL Web site, www.ysoc.org.
