Oklahoma scene: Astros announced RedHawks coaching staff
Manager Tony DeFrancesco will return for his third season in Oklahoma City after ending last season as Houston's interim manager.
The Houston Astros announced Friday that Tony DeFrancesco will return to manage the Oklahoma City RedHawks.
DeFrancesco will begin his third season in Oklahoma City. Last summer, he became the first manager in Oklahoma City baseball history to receive a major league call up during the season. DeFrancesco managed the Astros the last month and a half after the then-National League team fired Brad Mills. The Astros were the worst team in big league baseball statistically, but they were 15-15 over the last month under DeFrancesco and several players who spent part of the 2012 season in Oklahoma City.
The RedHawks are 135-135 under DeFrancesco, who had the team in the Pacific Coast League pennant race most of the season. Tom Lawless, who replaced DeFrancesco, guided Oklahoma City to an 11-5 record and second-place finish in the Southern Division. Lawless will join DeFrancesco's staff full-time for the 2013 season as infield coach.
Also returning to the RedHawks is hitting coach Leon Roberts. Steve Webber will be the pitching coach, his first with the Astros' Triple-A team.
The RedHawks open the home season April 12 against Memphis at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
