Oklahoma scene: Brian Bixler accepts assignment with RedHawks
Astros utility man Brian Bixler has cleared waivers and accepted an assignment with the RedHawks.
Bixler had been designated for assignment to clear space on Houston's 40-man roster after a trade that brought in Jed Lowrie and Kyle Weiland. He will come to Astros spring training as a nonroster invitee.
Bixler has played all four infield and three outfield positions in the majors. He claimed off waivers from the Nationals on Nov. 3.
Masters joins OU track program
Oklahoma track and field coach Martin Smith announced that Riley Masters has signed with the Sooners and will enroll for the spring semester.
Masters was an indoor standout in the mile at the University of Maine. He earned All-America honors in the event after finishing fifth at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championship. He repeated as an All-American at the 2011 indoor meet.
Hedwall earns rookie honor
Former Oklahoma State golfer Caroline Hedwall was named the Ladies European Tour Rookie of the Year.
The native of Barsebäck, Sweden, played in 20 events this season and earned 278,528.87 euros to finish third on the tour's money list behind Ai Miyazato and Melissa Reid. She won four events on the tour this year.
Next season, Hedwall will compete as a member of both the LPGA and Ladies European Tours.
