Oklahoma scene: Edmonton Oilers add three players to Barons roster

Toni Rajala, Philippe Cornet and Ryan Martindale join team after loss of “Fab Four”
From Staff Reports Published: January 7, 2013

The Edmonton Oilers made some expected moves Monday, retooling the Oklahoma City Barons with three players from Double-A Stockton. The Oilers assigned forwards Toni Rajala, Philippe Cornet and Ryan Martindale to the Barons of the American Hockey League. The trio will help replace the loss of four players — Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall, Justin Schultz and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins — to the NHL now that the lockout has ended.

Rajala, a fourth-round draft pick in 2009 by Edmonton, led Stockton in scoring with 38 points in 29 games. Cornet was an AHL All-Star last season for Oklahoma City. The Barons did not have roster room for him this season until now; Cornet had 23 points in 18 games for the Thunder, which sits second in its division. Martindale returns to OKC after a brief stint with the East Coast Hockey League team. He had two assists for the Thunder.

More roster moves in Oklahoma City are expected with the possible NHL call-ups of Teemu Hartikainen, Magnus Paajarvi, Mark Arcobello and Colten Teubert.

The new-look Barons host the Charlotte Checkers at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Cox Center. Tickets are available at the Cox Center box office.

The Texas Rangers Caravan has scheduled an Oklahoma City stop Monday, Jan. 14, at Academy Sports, 7700 S. Walker Ave at Interstate 240. Scheduled to sign autographs from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. are first base/infield coach Dave Anderson, pitchers Justin Grimm, Michael Kirkman and Tanner Scheppers and radio announcer Eric Nadel. Only one autograph per person is allowed.
