Oklahoma scene: No. 2 Penn State whips No. 7 OSU in wrestling

Central Oklahoma standouts Cory Dauphin and Casy Rowell win MIAA championships.

Second-ranked Penn State won four of the last five weights Sunday and topped No. 7 Oklahoma State 23-12 in a dual between wrestling powers at Rec Hall in State College, Pa.

A crowd of 6,571 watched David Taylor at 165 pounds, Ed Ruth at 184, Morgan McIntosh at 197 and heavyweight Jon Gingrich triumph and help the Nittany Lions (13-1) pull away. Taylor and Ruth are No. 1 in the nation at respective weights. Taylor decisioned No. 5-ranked Tyler Caldwell 5-2, and Ruth pinned redshirt freshman Nolan Boyd at 5:41.

In one of the highlight matches of the day, No. 2 Chris Perry of OSU decisioned No. 5 Matt Brown in overtime. The rematch of 2013 NCAA finalists was decided in the second OT when defending champion Perry used an escape for a 3-2 victory.

OSU (9-5) will take on Arizona State at 7 p.m. Friday at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater.

DAUPHIN, ROWELL WIN TITLES

The University of Central Oklahoma finished third in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Wrestling Tournament on Sunday in Hays, Kan., but Cory Dauphin and Casy Rowell came away with individual championships.
