The big hit on Friday came from Megan Whitmire, who had a three-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning. UCO, which is hosting its first regional softball tournament in program history, will play Emporia State (Kan.) in a 1 p.m. Saturday winner's bracket final at Edmond North.

CASEY'S BAT LIFTS SOONERS

Freshman Georgia Casey hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday, and No. 3-ranked Oklahoma stunned No. 8 Texas 5-2 in Big 12 softball at Marita Hynes Field in Norman.

OU (41-7 overall, 15-4 Big 12) trailed 2-0 before tying it in the sixth inning on back-to-back solo home runs from Keilani Ricketts and Erica Sampson. Ricketts also pitched for the Sooners; she gave up three hits, no walks and struck out 13. Ricketts threw three wild pitches in the game.

The Sooners and Texas (40-9, 14-7) will play 2 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday.

PATRIOTS HAVE NEW HEAD COACH

Putnam City West promoted linebackers coach Rocky Martin to head football coach on Friday to fill the void of John Jensen, who was removed from the position last month. This will be the first head coaching job for Martin, a former Colorado State player who helped the Rams to four bowl games, including the 2000 squad that finished No. 14 in the country. He takes over a Class 6A program that has not had a winning season since 2000.
