Oklahoma scene: Norman resident Chris Bell wins first World of Outlaws race

Bell, 19, pursed $6,000 for winning the 40-lap race on a quarter-mile dirt track, which will be one of the smallest venues the professional sprint car circuit will run this summer. Bell overcame three caution flags and worked his way through lapped traffic to win.

The Central Oklahoma baseball team was eliminated from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament on Friday with a 5-2 loss to Missouri Western and 12-1 setback to Emporia State.

UCO finished its season 37-17, the most wins for a Bronchos baseball team since winning 40 in 2007.


Tori Collet was 5-for-5 with five RBIs on Friday, leading Central Oklahoma to a 7-5 win over Emporia State (Kan.) on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Division II Central Regional Softball Tournament in Mankato, Minn.


The UCLA Bruins owned a one-stroke lead Friday after the second round of the NCAA Women’s Central Regional Golf Tournament at Karsten Creek in Stillwater. The Bruins are at 12-over-par 588 with the final round scheduled Saturday.

California was second at 13 over. Oklahoma State was tied with Mississippi State for eighth place. The Cowgirls and Bulldogs were 20 over.

Wad Phaewchimplee of Kent State continued to lead the individual standings. She is 6-under 138, which is four strokes better than Dana Finkelstein of UNLV. Jayde Panos of Oklahoma State was tied for third at 1-under 143.

•Defending national champion USC and Arizona State were tied after two rounds at the NCAA Women’s West Regional at Cle Elum, Wash. The Trojans and Sun Devils each had a 578 team score; USC’s Kyung Kim and Washington’s SooBin Kim were tied for first in the individual race with a two-round 140.

Oklahoma was fourth in the team standings, eight shots behind the co-leaders. Alexandra Kaui was tied for sixth individually with a 144.
