Oklahoma scene: OBU women lose in first round of NAIA Tournament

The Bison recovered from a 14-point deficit to force overtime, but Shawnee State pulls out a 94-91 victory.

OBU women falls in OT

Oklahoma Baptist came back to force overtime Thursday, but Shawnee State (Ohio) still beat the Bison 94-91 in the first round of the NAIA Women’s Basketball Championships at the Frankfort Convention Center in Frankfort, Ky.

OBU (28-6) trailed by 14 points in the first half, before coming back to take a 67-65 lead with 9:07 remaining in regulation. For the remainder of regulation the Bison and Bears were tied eight times and exchanged leads 10.

Oklahoma Baptist led by one with 3:13 left in overtime, but it managed just two points the rest of the way.

Alannah Sheets had 45 points for Shawnee State (20-12).

Jalissa Council had 21 points and 10 rebounds for OBU, which advanced to nationals by winning the Sooner Athletic Conference championship.

The OBU loss leaves just one Oklahoma team in the tournament. Second-seeded Oklahoma City (23-4) will play Montana State-Northern (22-9) at 12:30 p.m. Friday.

•St. Gregory’s made its first appearance at the NAIA Men’s Basketball Championships in 14 years on Thursday and whipped Wiley (Texas) 84-69 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.

The game was tied 30-30 at intermission, before St. Gregory’s (22-9) took over in the second half behind 54 percent shooting from the field. Marty Wilkerson had 20 points for the Cavaliers, while Josiah Campbell had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
