Oklahoma scene: OCU golf team remains in third

Donnita Drain is leaving Langston to become the new women's basketball coach at
Grambling State.
Langston was 84-12 over the past three seasons under Drain. The Taloga native coached 13 seasons at the NAIA school. The
Lions had nine consecutive winning seasons under the coach, who played collegiately at
Northwestern Oklahoma State.
"This experience is bittersweet,” Drain said. "When as much time and effort is invested in a program, it is painful to leave.”
•OSU in third place: Oklahoma State finished the first day of the
NCAA Central Regional Golf Tournament in third place on Thursday in
Columbus, Ohio. The Cowboys shot a 9-over-par 293 as a team and finished three shots behind leader
Wake Forest.
Alabama was second, two shots behind the
Demon Deacons.
OSU true freshman
Kevin Tway was tied for second in the individual standings after shooting a 1-under 70. The former Edmond North standout will go into today's second round one shot behind
Brendan Gielow of Wake Forest.
Trent Leon was the only other Cowboy to make par, finishing Thursday's round even. Leon is tied for seventh among individuals.
•Stars remain third: Oklahoma City University remained in third place on Thursday at the NAIA Men's Golf Championships in
Plymouth,
Ind. OCU, which is trying to win its third consecutive national title, is 11 shots behind leader
British Columbia.
Johnson & Wales (
Fla.) remained second and is three shots behind the leader. Oklahoma Christian made a big jump in the team standings. The Eagles shot a 6-under-par 282 and moved to fourth place. OC is 12 shots behind British Columbia.
Nick Zappin of Johnson & Wales is 8-under after three rounds in the individual standings. Oklahoma Christian's
Fernando Gonzales is in fifth place after 2-under on Thursday, but the Eagles had a big boost from
Rhein Gibson, who shot a tournament-low 68.
The final round is today on the Indiana National Golf Club course.
•NCRA to run in Enid: The
National Championship Racing Association will has a scheduled stop at 7 p.m. Saturday at Enid Speedway Park. An estimated 40 modifieds will compete, including five-time NCRA champion
Brian Franz of Halstad, Kan.
The track is located 2½ miles north of U.S. Highway 412 on
U.S. 81, then a half-mile east on
West Oxford. The track is on the
Garfield County Fairgrounds.
•Medicine Bear signs with Langston: Lanisha Medicine Bear of Watonga signed to play softball at Langston. The pitcher/first baseman was an All-State selection this past high school fast-pitch season. Langston interim coach
Marsha Cusak called Medicine Bear the biggest recruit in the program's history.
•UCO golfer honored: Central Oklahoma golfer
Colby Shrum has been selected to the NCAA Division II PING All-South Central Regional Team.
The Perry sophomore led the Bronchos in 2007-08, finishing with a 72.2 scoring average for 11 tournaments during the fall and spring seasons.
