Oklahoma scene: OCU routs Central Methodist in first round of NAIA Championships

Defending national champ forces Central Missouri into 28 turnovers. Lauren Gober scores 17 points, grabs eight rebounds.

*Oklahoma Christian University coach Dan Hays notched career win No. 700 Wednesday, when the Eagles whipped Spring Arbor (Mich.) 83-59 in the first round of the NCCAA Men's Basketball Tournament in Winona Lake, Ind. Hays, who has been at OC for 30 years, watched his club advance behind Will Reinke, who had 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Oklahoma Christian only led by three points at the break, but it dominated the Cougars in the second half. The Eagles shot 57 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes compared to Spring Arbor's 39 percent.

OC will play either Cedarville (Ohio) or Tennessee Temple at 4:15 p.m. Friday.

OU WINS IN NINTH

Jack Mayfield's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning drove home the winning run Wednesday, and Oklahoma trimmed New Mexico State 3-2 in baseball at Mitchell Park in Norman. Mayfield finished the game with two hits and two RBIs. He scored once and stole a base to help the Sooners improve to 14-4. Matt Oberste and Kolbey Carpenter added two hits apiece.

OU pitching was solid. Starter Kyle Hayes and relievers Billy Waltrip and Jacob Evans combined for 11 strikeouts and just four walks. New Mexico State managed just five hits.

The Sooners next play at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Northwestern State (La.) at Mitchell Park.
