The Oklahoma rowing team won its first Conference USA championship to secure the program's first NCAA Championship berth. The Sooners, in their fifth season as a varsity program, won three races and finished second in the other two events for a total of 63 points, ahead of Tennessee's 57 and Texas' 56 on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
The Sooners won conference titles in the second varsity eight, varsity four and open four with runner-up finishes in the varsity eight and novice eight.
OU's Leeanne Crain was named the Conference USA Coach of the Year, while senior captain Nikki Furmanek earned Rower of the Year honors for the second straight season. Freshman Taylor Gillespie was named the Newcomer of the Year. Furmanek and fellow seniors Meghan Farrell, Ashley LaFollette and Rebecca Staff were named to the Conference USA All-Conference Team.
The NCAA meet is May 31-June 2 in Indianapolis.
OSU GOLF TEAM SECURES NCAA BERTH
The Oklahoma State men's golf team had a 292 closing score on Saturday at the NCAA Fayetteville Regional at Blessings Golf Club to secure the 66th NCAA Championship berth in the 67-year history of the program.
The Cowboys posted a 4-over third round to finish fourth and grab one of the regional's five qualifying spots. The Cowboys finished at 882, 18-over, and two shots behind Texas for third. Illinois claimed the regional title at 863, while Arkansas was second at 866. Kent State grabbed the fifth spot at 892.
OSU junior Kevin Dougherty tied for fifth place at 216, and freshman Jordan Niebrugge tying for 10th at 219.
The NCAA Championship will be held at The Capital City Club's Crabapple Course in Atlanta beginning May 28.
OU GOLFERS HEADED TO NCAAS
The Oklahoma men's golf team tied for fifth place at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional, and after a playoff on the 18th hole with South Florida, OU will advance to its third straight NCAA Championships. The Sooners recorded a one-over 289 in Saturday's final round to finish with a 10-under 854.
OU's Abraham Ancer tied for 10th place with a three-round total of 209 (-7).
UCO SOFTBALL TEAM WINS SUPER REGIONAL
Hayley Hudson put Central Oklahoma ahead with a run-scoring single in the fifth inning, and the No. 19 Bronchos held on to beat Winona State 5-4 on Saturday to win the NCAA Division II Central Super Regional.
UCO (47-11) advances to the Division II World Series for the second straight year. The Bronchos will face Armstrong Atlantic in the eight-team World Series at 11 a.m. Thursday in Salem, Va.
UCO built an early 4-0 lead, but the Warriors rallied to tie it before the Bronchos took the lead for good in the fifth.
Nicole Workman was 3 for 4 with an RBI to pace the Bronchos' offense. UCO starter Kalynn Schrock (30-6) allowed eight hits and four runs, three earned, in a complete game victory. She struck out 11.
MCELROY, HOGAN WIN SILVER
Oklahoma City-based duo Kaitlyn McElroy and Maggie Hogan won the silver medal Saturday in the Women's K2 1000 meters at the 2013 ICF Sprint World Cup No. 2 in Racice, Czech Republic. The pair finished with a time of 3:39.969. McElroy and Hogan also finished fourth in the B Final for the Women's K2 500 meters with a time of 1:48.603.
