Oklahoma scene: OSU anglers Zack Birge, Blake Flurry win national title

Oklahoma State University juniors Zack Birge and Blake Flurry posted a total of 37 pounds, 13 ounces to win Carhartt Bassmaster National Championship held at three different sites over three days: the Arkansas River, Lake Maumelle and Hurricane Lake.

Oklahoma State University juniors Zack Birge and Blake Flurry posted a total of 37 pounds, 13 ounces to win Carhartt Bassmaster National Championship held at three different sites over three days: the Arkansas River, Lake Maumelle and Hurricane Lake.

Birge from Blanchard and Flurry from Roland led from start to finish in the three-day team tourney, weighing in 16 pounds, 5 ounces Friday on Hurricane Lake to finish almost three pounds ahead of second place Auburn.

University of Oklahoma anglers Tyler Nipper and Paul Muzljakovich finished 15th in the tournament.

The victory also earns Birge and Flurry the opportunity to fish Saturday and Sunday against other top collegiate anglers in an individual tournament where the winner receives a berth in the 2013 Bassmaster Classic on Oklahoma's Grand Lake.

CAVEN TO HELP COACH U.S. TEAM

Oklahoma City University canoe/kayak coach Shaun Caven will help guide the United States in the London Olympics as sprint team manager/coach.

Caven has been the Stars' coach for two years. Caven also serves as OKC National High Performance Center head coach.
