Oklahoma scene: OSU to play in preseason Women's NIT

Oklahoma State will play in the preseason Women’s NIT this season, beginning with a rematch against an Arkansas-Little Rock team that defeated the Cowgirls last season.

OSU announced Tuesday that the Cowgirls will play host to the Trojans on Nov. 13 in Stillwater. The winner will advance to face either Georgia Tech or Winthrop.

The 16-team field also includes Ohio State, West Virginia, Bowling Green and Marist.

Arkansas-Little Rock returns all five starters from a team that beat Oklahoma State 65-51 last season in Little Rock.

2 area golfers qualify for Junior Amateur
Talor Gooch of Midwest City and Caleb Meyers of Edmond earned spots in the U.S. Junior Amateur at a qualifier last week at Jimmie Austin Golf Club in Norman. Gooch, a member of The Oklahoman’s All-City golf team, shot a 136 in the 36-hole qualifier to win the local qualifier for a national tournament Tiger Woods won three times in the early 1990s. Meyers shot 143. This year’s tournament will be July 20-25 at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J.

Flinton stumbles at PGA pro tourney
Oklahoma City native Kyle Flinton faltered at the PGA Professional National Championship on Tuesday. Playing at Twin Warriors Golf Club in Santa Ana Puebla, N.M., Flinton fired a 5-over 76 and is tied for 19th at 1-under 212 after three rounds.

Also in the tie for 19th are Edmond’s Mark Fuller, whot shot an even-par 71 on Tuesday, and Oklahoma City’s Tim Graves, who shot 72.

Oklahoma City’s Tim Fleming is tied for 46th at 2-over 215 after a 73. Jeff Freeman of Norman is tied for 54th at 3-over.
