Oklahoma scene: OSU wrestling coach John Smith headed back to Olympics

The two-time gold medalist and four-time world champion will be an assistant for the U.S. Freestyle Team in London.

Oklahoma State wrestling coach John Smith was selected as a volunteer assistant coach for the U.S. Freestyle Olympic Team for the 2012 London Games. Smith, Mark Manning of Nebraska and Lou Rosselli of Ohio State will work under U.S. head coach Zeke Jones. Smith, a two-time gold medalist and four-time world champion as a wrestler, was the co-head coach of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team.


The Oil Capital Racing Association will have a sprint car points race at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore. Rose resident Jamie Passmore tops the standings behind five feature wins through nine points races. Three players from Edmond North High School made the finals of the U.S. Tennis Association/Missouri Valley Sweet 16 Championships in Kansas City, Mo.

North junior Ann Pepper and doubles partner Emma Schelble of Omaha, Neb., won the Girls 18s championship at the Plaza Tennis Center. North's David Hager and Lee-Shawn Stein were put in an unusual situation — both reached the Boys 16s singles championship. Hager defeated his high school teammate 6-4, 6-2.

Tulsa resident Morgan Coppoc won the Girls 14s singles title.
