Oklahoma scene: OU rowers Rebecca Staff, Nikki Furmanek take bronze medal

The Sooners' fall regatta season is finished. The spring season begins March 9-10 with the OU Invitational on the Oklahoma River.

The Oklahoma rowing team added a bronze medal to its collection of honors Sunday afternoon at the Head of the Hooch Regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Sooners capped the final regatta of the fall season with Rebecca Staff and Nikki Furmanek finishing third in the open pair division. A total of 44 boats were entered in the division on the Tennessee River. Staff and Furmanek finished the race in 20 minutes, 19.8 seconds.

Duke won in 19:26.3, and Louisville was second in 20:12.9.

The spring season begins March 9-10, when the Sooners host the OU Invitational on the Oklahoma River.

RED WINS SERIES

Hector Lorenzana and Jack Mayfield homered Sunday to lead the Red to a 6-2 victory over the White to win OU baseball's annual fall World Series at Mitchell Park in Norman. The Red swept the best-of-five series. Although the Red won the title Sunday, the Sooners will play two more games before shutting down for the winter. Games are scheduled 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at Mitchell Park.

DOGS ARE LEAGUE CHAMPS

Jessica Carbonara and Kelsey Visor scored about three minutes apart Sunday to help Southwestern State beat Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) 2-1 in the Great American Conference Women's Soccer Championships finale. The second-half goals elevated the Bulldogs to the NCAA Division II Tournament; pairings will be announced 6:30 p.m. Monday.

RITCHIE TAKES MEMPHIS TITLE

Whitney Ritchie won a singles bracket championship Sunday at the Memphis Invitational in Tennessee. The junior from Bishop McGuinness defeated Caroline Wegner of Memphis 6-3, 6-3 in the championship match. Ritchie and Hermon Brhane teamed to beat Mara Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany of Purdue 8-3 for the doubles championship.
