Oklahoma scene: OU softball team suffers first loss of season

The Oklahoma baseball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Pepperdine 7-2 at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

OU's Matt Oberste was 3-for-4 with a triple and his team-leading fourth home run of the year.

The series concludes at 1 p.m. Sunday in Norman.


Charlton Jones scored 21 points, and Terry Johnson added 17 as Oklahoma City University beat John Brown (Ark.) 77-72 to win the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament men's basketball tournament on Saturday in Shawnee.

Troynell Adams added 15 points for the Stars.

*Kelsey Hoppel scored 30 points to lead Lubbock Christian to a 77-64 win over OCU in the women's finals.

Desiree Jeffries had 22 points to lead OCU


Former Oklahoma gymnast and 2012 Olympian Jake Dalton won the 2013 AT&T American Cup in Worcester, Mass., with an all-around score of 89.398.

Competing against eight of the best international gymnasts, Dalton won the floor, rings, vault and high-bar titles in addition to the all-around crown.

Dalton's all-around score was more than two points better than Ukraine's Oleg Verniaiev, who finished second. Dannell Leyva, the only other U.S. gymnast selected to compete, finished sixth with an 85.265.


Jaime Melendez, who played offensive line on OU's national championship teams of 1974 and 1975, died of cancer last Sunday. He was 57.

Melendez, who was born in the Panama Canal Zone, graduated from Lawton High School in 1973 while his father was stationed at Fort Sill.

Melendez spent 28 years teaching middle school in the Broken Arrow and Tulsa school systems. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Darcy; daughters Natalie and Dominique; son-in-law Trevor Jones; and grandchildren Darian and Leah.
