OU women's basketball coach Sherri Coale will lead Team USA at the 2013 Women's World University Games this summer in Kazan, Russia, USA Basketball announced Tuesday.
Coale served as an assistant for the 2001 bronze-medal winning Junior World Championship Team and as a USA Basketball Women's Collegiate Committee member from 2005-08.
“It was an absolute honor to serve USA Basketball as both an assistant coach and a selection committee member,” Coale said. “Representing our country via this sport that I love is the ultimate opportunity — an opportunity that I don't take lightly and one that I am humbled to accept.”
OU softball team earns consensus No. 1 ranking
For the first time in program history, the OU softball team is the consensus No. 1 team in the nation.
The Sooners (22-1) earned all 31 first-place votes in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Poll and 18 of 20 votes from the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Poll, both of which were released Tuesday.
The Sooners have now been atop the USA Softball poll for five consecutive weeks.
Also on Tuesday, OU sophomore infielder Shelby Pendley was named the Big 12 Player of the Week. Pendley was 7 for 9, including four home runs, during the Sooners' four games against Northern Colorado and Drake. She also scored 10 runs, had 13 RBIs and drew five walks during that stretch.
Former OSU player takes over defense at NEO
Former Oklahoma State deep snapper Zach Allen has been named defensive coordinator at Northeastern A&M in Miami. Allen, an Edmond Memorial graduate, was previously NEO's defensive line coach, special teams coordinator and recruiting coordinator.
He replaces James Cheatham, who left to become head football coach at Miami High School. Also joining the NEO staff is new cornerbacks coach Maurice Gray, a former defensive back at Butler Community College and OSU.
Lander reassigned to Oklahoma City
The Edmonton Oilers assigned center Anton Lander to the Oklahoma City Barons on Tuesday.
Lander was recalled by Edmonton on Jan. 31 but has been sidelined a month with a broken foot after appearing in four games with the Oilers. In 39 games this season with the Barons, Lander has scored 10 points, including three goals.
The Barons' next game is Wednesday night at San Antonio.
