Georgia Casey hit two homers and collected five RBIs Sunday as Oklahoma outlasted Northwestern 7-4 during the final day of the Kajikawa Softball Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
Unlike its previous four games in the season-opening tournament, the Sooners (5-0) struggled somewhat against the winless Big Ten team. Northwestern rattled OU starting pitcher Keilani Ricketts for all four runs on five hits in just two innings. Michelle Gascoigne took over the third inning and blanked the Wildcats on three hits the rest of the way.
Casey's two, two-run homers helped OU recover from a 4-2 deficit.
Oklahoma next plays Friday at the Campbell-Cartier Classic in San Diego. The Sooners will play Cal Riverside, San Diego State, Kentucky, Washington and Notre Dame during the three-day gathering.
*Oklahoma State (2-2) had its final game at the Red Dirt Classic, against Tennessee, canceled due to cold weather in St. George, Utah. OSU will play in the Lovelace Invitational next weekend in Denton, Texas.
UCO FALLS IN LEAGUE MEET
Defending NCAA Division II champion Nebraska-Kearney picked up a big victory at 149 pounds Sunday and trimmed Central Oklahoma for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament championship at Hamilton Field House in Edmond. Nebraska-Kearney won the six-team meet with 109 total points; UCO had 102 points.
All 10 weights were won by a wrestler from either Nebraska-Kearney or UCO — but the Lopers' big victory came at 149 where No. 6-ranked Raufeon Stots upset top-ranked Jordan Basks in overtime. The match entered sudden death tied 4-4, and Stots used a takedown to take the win. The winning points came shortly after Stots denied Basks' takedown attempt.
The Bronchos' Casy Rowell was named MIAA Wrestler of the Year after he defeated Nebraska-Kearney's Daniel DeShazer in overtime of the 133-pound match. Other UCO champions were Trison Graham (141), Cory Dauphin (157), Znick Ferrell (197) and Cody Dauphin (heavyweight).
FORMER OU STAR WINS
Former Oklahoma gymnast and 2012 Olympian Jake Dalton won the all-around championship Sunday at the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas. Dalton had a two-day score of 173.250. Dalton, who competed at OU over the 2010-12 seasons, won individual titles on the floor (31.250) and rings (29.650). Dalton was the all-around champ at the 2011 Winter Cup.
