Central Oklahoma failed to continue its momentum from the day before and lost a 47-17 decision to Central Missouri on Sunday afternoon in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association football game in Warrensburg, Mo. The game was postponed at the start of the second quarter Saturday due to severe weather with UCO holding a 10-6 lead.
But Central Missouri (5-2 overall, 5-2 MIAA) scored 17 consecutive points Sunday to take the lead for good.
UCO running back Joshua Birmingham had a strong game despite the Bronchos falling to 1-6 overall and in the league. The junior from Luther finished with 216 all-purpose yards. Birmingham had a 73-yard catch-and-run from backup quarterback Ethan Sharp, who started in place of injured Adrian Nelson. Sharp, a senior from Eufaula, finished with 295 yards passing.
JOHNSON WINS $13,000
Oklahoma City native Wayne Johnson pursed $13,000 late Saturday night after winning the second annual Lone Star Nationals sprint car race in Kilgore, Texas. Johnson, a former champion at now-defunct State Fair Speedway, continued his success on the American Sprint Car Series' national tour by leading all 40 laps of the feature race. The $13,000 prize was the largest payday of the season for Johnson, who is just 50 points shy of standings leader Jason Johnson of Eunice, La.
Wayne Johnson has nine feature victories this season.
*The Oil Capital Racing Series sprint car event at Brill's Motor Speedway in Meeker on Sunday was canceled due to a wet track. OCRS spokesman John Lemon said the race will not be rescheduled. The card at Brill's Speedway was the last of the season. Jamie Passmore of Rose had already clinched the season championship.
COWGIRLS TIE BEARS
Both teams had near misses Sunday as Oklahoma State and Baylor finished a Big 12 soccer match in a 0-0 tie in Stillwater. OSU goalkeeper AD Franch notched her sixth shutout of the season and 38th of a stellar career. Oklahoma State (10-4-3 overall, 1-3-3 Big 12) will play at the University of Milwaukee next Sunday, and then end its regular season Oct. 26 against Texas Tech in Lubbock.
*Renae Cuellar, Jessica Johnson and Emily Bowman scored goals Sunday as Oklahoma beat TCU 3-1 in a Big 12 soccer game in Norman. OU (6-7-4 overall, 2-2-2 Big 12) never trailed in the game. Sooners goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire was working on a shutout until Brittany Slyman scored unassisted with less than nine minutes remaining in the match. OU plays at West Virginia at 6 p.m. Thursday.
