Oklahoma scene: UCO, Southwestern State in Division II soccer tournament

Oklahoma Baptist will host the Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball tournament Friday and Saturday.

Central Oklahoma was awarded an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Soccer Championships. The Bronchos (15-2-3) will play Fort Hays State (14-6-1) in a first-round match at 1 p.m. Friday at the Central Regional II Tournament in Mankato, Minn. UCO lost in double overtime to Fort Hays State in last week's Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association postseason tournament semifinals.

The winner of Friday's match will play host Minnesota-Mankato (16-1-2) on Sunday.

Southwestern State was assigned to the Central Regional I Tournament in Warrensburg, Mo. The Bulldogs (19-0-1) will face Minot State (15-3-3) on Friday. The winner will play host Central Missouri on Sunday. The Central Regional I and II champions will play the next week at a site to be determined by the NCAA.


Oklahoma Baptist University will host the Sooner Athletic Conference Volleyball Championships in Shawnee. The tournament begins Friday and runs through Saturday at the Noble Complex.

Friday's pairings have Wayland Baptist, Texas (17-14) vs. St. Gregory's (12-15), 10:30 a.m.; Oklahoma City (15-21) vs. John Brown, Ark. (21-15), 1 p.m.; Lubbock Christian, Texas (23-8) vs. Wayland Baptist-St. Gregory's winner at 4 p.m.; and Oklahoma Baptist (29-4) vs. the OCU-John Brown victory at 7. The championship match is 7 p.m. Saturday.


Four wrestlers from both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State won championships Sunday at the Oklahoma City Open at Abe Lemons Arena. Jarrod Patterson at 125 pounds, Cody Brewer (133), Justin Deangelis (157) and Travis Rutt (184) won for OU. Case Garrison (141), Josh Kindig (149), Kyle Crutchmer (174) and Tyson Yoder (heavyweight) triumphed for the Cowboys. One wrestler from host OCU won, Zach Skates at 165 pounds. The only non-state wrestler to win a title was at 197 pounds, Josh Manu of Missouri Valley.
