A product of Luther High School, Tate was a running back for the Bronchos from 1977-80 and led UCO to an NAIA national runner-up finish in 1979.

"Steve never said a word and was the nicest person in the world off the field,"former UCO coach Gary Howard said. "But on the field he was a mean, tough competitor and one of the best players to ever come through Central."

Tate is the only player in school history to earn All-Conference honors four times and All-America recognition three times. Funeral arrangements are pending.

OCU Open today
Wrestlers from OCU, OSU, UCO and OU will take part in the Oklahoma Open today at Abe Lemons Arena.

The Cowboys, Sooners and Bronchos are bringing their entire teams to the event.

Admission is $4 for students and $6 for adults. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. with all matches going straight through the afternoon to conclusion.

OU volleyball rolls past Kansas
The Oklahoma volleyball team made quick work of Kansas on Saturday in Norman, winning 21-17, 21-16 and 21-13. The Sooners held the Jayhawks to a .097 hitting percentage and the Sooners also forced 26 Jayhawk errors.

"It was an awesome performance,” said Oklahoma head coach Santiago Restrepo. "We played very well as a team and played very composed. We played hard throughout the match, and it was just a great overall performance.”

Junior Francie Ekwerekwu led OU with nine kills. Ekwerekwu hit .412 and added five total blocks, including one block solo.

OU travels to Columbia Wednesday to face Missouri at 6:30 p.m.
