The Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics inaugurated a former math textbook author and publisher as the school's new chief.

Frank Y.H. Wang was installed as the second president in the school's 22-year history at a ceremony Thursday. Wang stepped into the post in August.

From 1996-03, Wang was chairman of Saxon Publishers, a textbook publishing firm.

Wang had worked for Saxon in various capacities since the company's early days in 1980, eventually taking over as CEO when founder John Saxon died in 1996.

While at Saxon, Wang co-authored several widely used textbooks, including the Saxon Calculus text.

After resigning his post at Saxon in 2003, Wang came to the school as a math teacher, where he taught for two years without pay. Wang said he was paid well enough in his time as chairman at Saxon that it left him comfortable enough to pursue his interest in teaching.

“I wanted to be in the classroom,” he said. “I wanted to be teaching.”

Most recently, Wang founded Wang Education, a Dallas-based firm that sold math teacher resources. Wang also offered teacher training through the firm, which he closed in July to take the position at OSSM.
