Oklahoma schools win grants for professional development

The state Board of Education handed out grants to schools throughout Oklahoma to promote advanced coursework.

The state Board of Education awarded more than $250,000 in grants to schools across the state during a meeting Thursday.

The grants are for a program called Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID.

The college-readiness program encourages students to pursue advanced coursework. Most of the grant funds will be used for professional development, state officials said.

Recipients are:

Grove High School in Delaware County, $60,000.

Millwood Elementary School in Oklahoma County, $60,000.

McAlester High School in Pittsburg County, $57,000.

Puterbaugh Middle School in Pittsburg County, $60,000.

Harding Charter Prep High School in Oklahoma County, $16,000 added on to a previous grant.

Other awards

Also, the board honored an Oklahoma City principal and several students from throughout the state.

Tracy McDaniel, principal of KIPP Reach College Preparatory School, received the Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership for 2012 from the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program. He is one of seven principals throughout the country to win the award.

The board honored students who won the Prudential Spirit of Community Award for community service. The winners are Perrin Duncan, a senior from Edmond Public Schools, and Mason Harvey, an eighth-grader from Guthrie Public Schools.

Distinguished finalists for the award from Oklahoma are:

Ellise Crawford, a senior from Grove Public Schools.

Garrett Dollins, a senior from Perkins-Tryon Public Schools.

Elisabeth Willis, a junior from Canadian Public Schools.

Kaylee Young, a sophomore from Young Creations Homeschool.
