The executive director of the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association has apologized to a longtime high school basketball fan who complained in February about officiating.

In a reply to the fan’s email, Ed Sheakley wrote: “Make sure we get him enrolled next year. We need all those experts to blow a whistle for us.”

The fan wrote back, “About the type of flippant response I expected from you. ... It is that type of arrogant attitude that has the Legislature keeping a watchful eye on you.”

In another reply two days later, Sheakley wrote: “I apologize for the comment as that was not meant for you. I thought I was sending that to my Director of Officials in our office. ... I would entertain any suggestion that you have to improve the officiating of basketball.”
