Sen. Jim Inhofe, the most vocal skeptic in Congress of man-made global warming, accepted a challenge on Monday from longtime consumer advocate Ralph Nader to debate a Massachusetts congressman on the issue.

A spokesman for Rep. Ed Markey, who headed a select House committee on global warming, said the Massachusetts Democrat was also up for the debate.

Nader's challenge came in a letter to Inhofe, in which he said, “For the past decade, I have been reading about your description of the global warming assertions by scientists as ‘one of the greatest hoaxes' ever perpetrated.

“Your aversion to the climate change advocates has never flagged, to my knowledge … Clearly you are a man of your convictions on this subject. Just as clearly, Rep. Ed Markey is a man of his convictions on this topic.”

Nader suggested a debate, preferably on Capitol Hill, with a mutually acceptable moderator.

Inhofe, R-Tulsa, who has made joint appearances with Markey on news shows to discuss global warming, said he would welcome the debate.

“I expect that, true to form, Representative Markey will want to focus on the so-called ‘problem,' while trying to ignore the fact that their ‘solutions' — whether they be the Kyoto treaty, cap-and-trade or regulations by the EPA — will just destroy our already ailing economy while having no impact on the climate,” Inhofe said.

Eben Burnham-Snyder, a spokesman for Markey, said, “Congressman Markey would gladly discuss with Senator Inhofe the over 100 years of science that proves carbon dioxide and other global warming pollutants are raising the temperature of the Earth and changing the chemistry of the oceans.”
