NORMAN — Oklahoma seniors Gabe Ikard (football) and Sallie McLaurin (volleyball) were named the Big 12 Conference’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year for their respective sports, the league announced Tuesday.
Ikard, a longtime starter on the Sooners’ offensive line and a 2013 Walter Camp first-team All-American, graduated last May with a 4.0 grade point average and is currently pursuing a second undergraduate degree. The Bishop McGuinness product and three-time Academic All-American has said he plans to attend medical school after his football career is over.
McLaurin, an outside hitter on the OU volleyball team, is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection. The Carl Albert product is pursuing a degree in health and exercise science, and was named to the Capitol One All-America First team.
