Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park to stage “Cymbeline.”
Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park moves indoors for a nice respite from the summer heat with Shakespeare's rarely produced “Cymbeline,” scheduled at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. July 29 in Oklahoma City University's Burg Theatre, 2501 N Blackwelder.
Thought to have been written in 1609, the play follows the adventures of Princess Imogen, the beautiful daughter of Cymbeline, a pre-Christian King of Britain. Imogen embarks on a journey in this romance, a dark fairy tale filled with wicked stepmothers, beautiful princesses, buffoonish clowns, a minor war and divine interventions.
“Cymbeline” is one of Shakespeare's most plot-driven plays, its narrative unfolding against a backdrop of jealousy, betrayal, courage, repentance and redemption.
In the play, Imogen resists the advances of Iachimo and Cloten, but nevertheless, she is wrongly accused of adultery by her husband, Posthumus.
Directed by Kathryn McGill, this “Bare Bard” production features Shane McClure as Cymbeline, Michael Gibbons as Philario, Kyle Whalen as Posthumus, Allyson Capetta as Imogen, Elisa Regulski as Helen, Josh Henry as Cloten and David Fletcher-Hall as Belarius/Jupiter.
