NORMAN — Oklahoma pitcher Michelle Gascoigne wasn't at her best through Saturday's first two innings.
But even as Baylor blasted two home runs and seized early control, the senior stayed poised, knowing her teammates' big bats would eventually come alive.
“I was trusting in my team to score, because they're very good at that,” Gascoigne said.
The No. 1-ranked Sooners (33-2 overall, 2-0 Big 12) exploded with a five-run third inning, then added four more on their way to a 9-3 rout of Baylor.
OU beat the Bears 8-3 Friday in its Big 12 opener, and will go for a series sweep when the teams meet again at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Baylor leadoff hitter Kathy Shelton opened Saturday's game with a triple, then quickly scored on a wild pitch. A few batters later, Sarah Smith blasted a solo home run, giving Baylor a 2-0 lead.
The Bears (29-9, 3-4 Big 12) increased their advantage to 3-0 with catcher Clare Hosack's one-out homer in the second inning. That would be Baylor's last run of the day.
“I think Michelle could tell you that she wasn't at her best,” said OU coach Patty Gasso. “She knows that and we know that, and it's all good because that happens. What I love about Michelle is that she fought through it, and that fight allowed us to gain momentum in the dugout.”
