A fun day on the OU campus was tempered by offensive inefficiency Saturday in the Sooner spring game, slowing the momentum created by a 45-31 Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama.
A Michael Hunnicutt: The veteran kicker is quite valuable, even when he’s not catching Bedlam touchdown passes. Hunnicutt nailed a 52-yard field goal with the wind and, even more impressively, a 47-yarder against a 20 mph wind.
A Owen Field: The midfield logo, selected by fan vote, was an outline of the state, with the grass colored red and the interlocking OU in the middle. Great look. I endorse it for the 2014 season. Reminded me of the Kansas outline at Allen Fieldhouse’s midcourt when Roy Williams coached KU. The Owen Field end zones looked good, too, one painted white with red OKLAHOMA and the other painted red with white OKLAHOMA.
C Human receivers: OU’s wide receivers, missing Sterling Shepard and Durron Neal, didn’t have a reception until the fifth offensive possession, the 21st play of the scrimmage. Eventually, they totaled 12 of the 24 completions. Austin Bennett had four, Jordan Smallwood and Derrick Woods three each and K.J. Young two. They made no sensational plays but had only two drops, both by Bennett.
