Oklahoma standardized test dates extended in face of storms, closed schools

The Oklahoma Education Department announced Tuesday testing dates for most students will be pushed back because some schools have missed more than a week of school.

The announcement Tuesday that most testing dates were being extended was welcome news to officials in school districts that have missed as many as eight days of school and could miss more.

“Unfortunately the best days to go to school have been buried under 12 inches of snow,” said Steve Lindley, spokesman for the Putnam City School District, which already has been closed for five days heading into today's expected snowstorm.

Most exams in the Oklahoma School Testing Program have had their deadlines extended by a week or longer, including the End-of-Instruction exams for students on trimester schedules which were supposed to have been taken by this Friday but now has an extended deadline of Feb. 25.

While the testing announcement was a relief, superintendents still must decide how to make up the missed classroom time. The superintendents are weighing options like adding days to the end of the school year or having students attend on days they would were to be off.
