Oklahoma State basketball: Baylor stressed shutting down Phil Forte

One of the key stats from Baylor's 76-70 upset win over the Cowboys: The Bears had a 20-1 advantage in bench scoring.

Within that, another key stat: Zero points for OSU sixth man Phil Forte.

And it wasn't by accident.

Markel Brown scored a game-high 24 points and made six 3-pointers — the Cowboys' only made 3s — but Forte wasn't allowed to do damage as the Big 12's top 3-point shooter.

“We stressed that heavily,” Baylor's Brady Heslip said. “I think that's why Markel was able to knock down a couple of shots, because we said we'd rather anyone else on the team take an open 3 than to rotate off and then have Forte knock down some shots. Once he gets going, he can hit from pretty much anywhere, and that causes too much havoc on the defense.

“Obviously we wouldn't want Markel to make as many shots as he did, but we'll live with that as opposed to letting Forte get off and get some shots.”

ROUGH NIGHT FOR SMART, TOO

Cowboys sophomore Marcus Smart continues to impact games, just not as much as a shooting threat.

Smart's shooting struggles in Big 12 play continued Saturday, with a 3-of-14 shooting effort that included an 0-for-7 day from the 3-point line.

In eight conference games, Smart is now shooting 34.6 percent from the floor overall (36 of 104) and 22 percent from the arc (10 of 45).

“We just need him to do all the things that affect the game in a variety of ways,” said Cowboys coach Travis Ford, “whether it be rebounding or steals or getting other guys shots … and that just needs to be the priority for him.
