Oklahoma State basketball: Cowboys need overtime to sink Baylor

Overcoming maybe even the “Kansas hangover” the Cowboys had addressed with all the right words and good intentions earlier in the week.

So when the Bears' A.J. Walton lifted the potential go-ahead shot in the closing seconds of overtime, OSU's Michael Cobbins would have none of it, swatting Walton's attempt and setting up Markel Brown for a coast-to-coast, buzzer-beating layup that lifted the Cowboys to a 69-67 win before an estimated 7,500 at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

“I just figured we had come too far to give up a layup at the end,” said Cobbins, who grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to go with nine points and two blocks. “I just went up and tried to get it. Thank God I got it.”

When Brown clutched the rebound under the Baylor basket, just :04.7 seconds remained. Still, he dribbled the length of the floor and attacked, scoring with :00.2 showing.

“I took one glance at (the clock) — wait, I took two glances at it — and I was just trying to beat the clock as fast as I could.”

Brown just beat it, leaving the Bears no time to catch and shoot, with an errant final pass floating out of bounds and leaving OSU with a four-game Big 12 winning streak.

“I was hoping he would get to the rim,” said Cowboys coach Travis Ford, “because so many players pull up (and shoot). So many players don't think they have enough time. You've got more time than you think you do.

“I'm glad he got to the rim.”

He and an exuberant Gallagher-Iba crowd, forced to go on the wild ride with its team.

Baylor coach Scott Drew, not so much.

“Stinks to be on this end of it,” Drew said.

The Cowboys improved to 16-5 overall, 6-3 in the Big 12, but was sloppy from the outset in their first game after knocking off then-No. 2 Kansas on Saturday. Baylor fell to 14-8 and 5-4.

OSU shot just 36.1 percent from the floor, making but 26-of-72 attempts, including 3-of-21 from beyond the arc. Brown, who fired in seven 3s himself at Kansas, finished 4-of-17 shooting. And his performance was the worst, with teammate Marcus Smart enduring his worst shooting performance as a Cowboy, a 4-for-21 effort.
